New York Transit Museum
So today (or rather yesterday since it's past midnight) I headed over to the New York Transit Museum with a couple of friends. For those that don't know it, it is located in downtown Brooklyn and the website that has all that information regarding times and directions is www.mta.info/mta/museum/. It was a rainy day which made it quite perfect for wandering about old train cars.

I would highly recommend that anyone in the area visit this place. It was my first time there although I had been meaning to go for quite some time. It is located in an actual train station that had been converted to the museum and in addition to various displays and information regarding the history of the transportation services there are several very interesting things such as old subway cars from the different decades. My only complaint would be that there is no air conditioning and as such it was incredibly hot and stuffy there in August (dressed in a blouse, stockings and a corset). To tie this into fashion, of course, we took numerous photographs.

At one point me and my friends were also approached by an employee and asked if we were doing a photoshoot, but when I replied that we were just taking photographs for personal use (I said for myspace/facebook) he didn't give us any trouble. There were only 4 of us however so perhaps a larger group may have a problem.

The theme we did was more vintage then steampunk and my outfit was honestly something I threw together this morning about an hour before leaving the house, so I apologize if this is off topic. At least perhaps it will inspire anyone else who was thinking of doing a shoot there. Flash photography is not allowed however, so make sure your camera can take photographs in dim lighting. Many of mine blurred and did not come out well for that very reason.

Enough rambling! Onto the photographs! Buses and trains oh my~ )

By the way, yes, I actually changed my icon for the first time in years. It is me, swinging and pointing an umbrella, if anyone can tell. And with that I go sleep! Goodnight.

Shoes
First of all, do a little search online for anything by almost-unknown shoe-maker (apparently, I wouldn't know, I only found them tonight) Clevistyle. They have some amazing gents shoes at a sensible price in a good range of sizes.

As posted in my own journal:

Finally found some pennies to buy a pair of shoes. I've got two pairs that are dead, pretty much, one pair that's on its way out and all three are really beyond repair.

So, I bought these:

Reputable seller on eBay, should arrive within a fortnight. Got them for a sensible reduction of the retail price. I wanted a new pair of shoes that could work for formal and informal attire, be a bit different and less than £40.00

I've acheived that.

Of course, the benefit of purchasing through eBay with Paypal is that if I get a duff product, I can get my money back. Let us hope I don't have to though.

At the request of [info]jaborwhalky, I'm posting this here (originally posted on [info]darkvictoria). Enjoy!

For Dragon*Con this past weekend, I made a Clockwork Girl, with a dress from 1874 (French and English sources), and kept a dress diary as I went.

The jacket is black velvet, backed with coutil and lined in cotton. It is trimmed with about 8 yards of black beaded fringe, and the false sleeve linings are edged with 10 yards of lace. The skirt is a silver and black brocade, the chemise and bloomers of linen, and the bustle is muslin and steel banding from Home Depot's lumber yard *heh*

Clockwork Rosary
Hey everyone,

Someone had posted about rosaries and it inspired me to take a creative approach to this symbol. Now I will preface this to say that I am not Catholic but I enjoy crafting things with my own two hands regardless of religion. This is a standard 5 decade rosary made from brass finish nuts from the hardware store. 2 different sizes were used, #6-32 for the Ave Marias and 1/4" for the Paters. The gear used to bring the loop together is from an old clock and the cross was made with a #10-32 nut with two pieces of wire woven through and twisted. The rosary weighs about 2.75 oz.

Pictures Ahoy! )

Gun Mods!! My First!!
May I present for your viewing pleasure, two, never before seen by the eye of man...or woman, Faery Guns. These were designed by the esteamable Eulalie Graceman of Piper's Pool fame. Eulalie developed these after a series of unfortunate incidents in which a number of things went quite wrong and which could have been prevented if someone had only gotten rid of the local Faery population. Thus were born The Nuetralizer and The Capture.

Is this dress steamy enough?
I've just purchased 6 yards of black/royal blue shark skin fabric (looks black when you see it from straight on, blue from the side, etc) for this pattern http://www.butterick.com/web/shop.cgi?s.item.B4954. I'm removing the lace at the neck and sleeves. The buttons are silver squares with a slight rib accents with a half-sphere shaped blue stone. Before I get started on this time and money intensive project, is it steamy enough? In the fabric store it seemed so perfect but as always the minute I get home I'm not sure....

Steamlocks?
There is someone out in the Steampunk community that is known for his steampunky dreadlocks. I know he (I think this is a he I'm thinking of) has got an LJ, but I can't find it. I think he possibly also makes extensions and sells them? Does anyone know who I'm describing?

Edit: Thank you!

Tropical Storm Hanna wasn't what I was expecting, but whatever. (WTF I CAN SEE THE SUN NOW. DAMN YOU, HANNA. GETTING MY HOPES UP FOR SOMETHING KERAAAAAZY).

I live on a peninsula in Annapolis, so to go anywhere I have to take a bridge (Severn River, Naval Academy, and if I wanna go to the eastern shore, the Bay Bridge), and homg. Driving across the bridge was thrilling. Felix, my tiny Ford Escort was being pushed all over the place, and I was laughing the entire time. WOULD DO AGAIN. A++++

Makes me want to revive this story about a crew of storm chasers, just for shits and giggles.

Mum is in a bad mood because she doesn't feel good, which means that she needs to passive aggressively vent on the nearest person i.e. me. I am so excited.

Need shower.

I forgot not to die three months later

Because it deserves a post.
Yesterday afternoon, I went to [info]radionucleide's home(s) to see her before she leaves to England X3. As usual, we ha lot of fun!!! One of her friends also came and the three of us were laughing all the way. [info]radionucleide gave us some stuff (magazines and manga) that she didn't need anymore^^. But, sadly, she didn't want to give me here awesome Digimon artbook!!! I am so jalouse XDXD!!! Really, I am, but actually I understand why she wants to keep it X3. And instead of that I got a page of drawings from her on my sketchbook, among which there were a few Digimon doodles *-*!!!
And I always love her reaction when she sees my drawings:
her: "It shines!!!! It sparkles!! It is the kira kira effect!! How do you do that?"
me: "That is the shojo power!! If you wan't to master it, read Shojo mangas drawn before 1980 :p".
And of course, I did my usual hunt to see her sketchbooks (aww they are great, she is great, all is great!)because she doesn't post enough drawings on the internet ;-;!

So, what I have to say to conclude this awesome summary is: HAVE A NICE JOURNEY NIWAAAAA!! DON'T EAT TOO MUCH VINEGAR CHIPS!!!!! All will be all right!! And thanks again for all th fun we had together, and all the wonderful gifts **!! *big hug*

Oh!! And something funny happened to me when I took the metro to go back home. While playing to Cooking mama, somebody dropped their beer can and so I had some on me. The person was very sorry but actually I didn't mind that much. I was a bit worry that my bag could e dirtied because of that but actually it wasn't. But, then the person wanted to take my full of magazines paper from the floor which was full of beer, and it happens: the bottom of the bag had been destroyed by the liquid and so all my magazines dropped on the floor XDXD;;;. Luckily, a nice girl gave me a plastic bag (woh, it's awesome!! I never saw someone keeping an empty plastic bag on them before this very day). And then, I put my magazines into the bag, found another seat and all was allright X3 (except that I was smelling beer XD;;;).

I wanted to watch animes (especially code Geass in fact) during th week-end but it wouldn't be wise according to the homeworks I got. Happily, I like doing text explanations. Library! Wait for meeee!

ETA: Meme.
1. There are 30 questions.
2. Next to each number, write only the name of the person who fits.
3. Answer one question with one name.
4. Don't tell the questions to anyone who isn't doing the meme. (It means that you have to tell me that you are going to do the meme to get the questions.)

Can you help this dress?
Okay, so my best friend's mom was cleaning out a closet in their basement. This closet was filled with, among other things, some vintage dresses. The ones that my friend couldn't fit into her mom decided to give to me. Very sweet of her, right? Well, I did get one very beautiful c.1950s cream chiffon number and um... this )

Update: Do you all know how much love you are? If you don't, let me assure you, it's a lot. Thanks for all the wonderful advice. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!

So, inspired by the massive disgusting heat wave that Tropical Storm Hanna is sweeping before it like a huge crowd of refugees before an invading army, I have a question for my fellow steampunkers:

What do you guys do when you want/need to dress steampunk, but it's hotter than a Liverpool smeltery out there?

The problem, of course, stems from the fact that Victorian Europe had very impractical views of heat; frock coats, waistcoats, and high-necked bustle gowns may look amazing, but they're not suited to certain climates, as European colonists and settlers found out.

So my fellow steamers, what do you wear in mid-summer?

Edit: Apparently this needs to be cleared up, I'm not looking for inspiration, I know how I deal with it (linen, light fabrics, abandonment of coats) I learned that by dressing strangely in the summers of NYC for, oh, 8 years now. (and when I started, my god did I make some bad decisions) What I was wondering is how others do it: I was also secretly hoping that this would trigger an avalanche of photos of fun summer outfits.

My thanks for all the advice though.

Gypsy Steampunk?
First off, hallo! I've just joined this lovely community, in the hopes that you could answer a question for me-- or rather, give me a bit of advice.

I enter a bellydance competition every year. Nothing to do with steampunk, right? Except that I love the style, and want to use it, and since I have to make a costume anyway, I figured 'why not do steampunk?'

And then I find that I can't find the kinds of resources I'm looking for.

All right! That said, what I want to accomplish is, essentially, Gypsy (fantasy-style Gypsy, that is) Steampunk. I was hoping I could solicit some advice or opinions from you all. :) My basic idea is of a fairly simple, fairly light (I'll be moving around quite a lot, after all) white dress, slightly more Edwardian than Victorian. Over that, a bodice/vest resembling a waistcoat, and another skirt, dagged probably, in reds and yellows, really bright tones. I want to look worn, but not tattered.

Well, that's that... thank you for any help you can give me! :)
